I was born in Corfu, Greece, growing up before the rush of mass tourism, a place bursting with a kaleidescopic array of flora and fauna. I remember the first time I saw a potter working
and in what seemed like a magical sleight of hand a pot emerged out of an
amorphous lump of clay. My father had taken me to a local pottery in Corfu town, were
I grew up, run by two brothers who were deaf, their satisfaction in
the creative process evident even to my six year old self. Looking back now I wonder at
the many hands employed to craft the objects I have seen on my travels, a
millennia of inherited skills passed down through generations of potters.
From this early inspiration I ended up studying at the Central School of Art under a host of influential teachers: Gordon Baldwin, Gillian Lowndes, Eileen Nisbet, Kenneth Clarke, Dan Arbeid and the painter Geoffrye Rogers. It was a liberating time, the proximity of the British Museum around the corner was a history lesson in ceramics from the earliest time through a succession of cultures and civilizations including my own Greek roots.
In 1980 I set up my first studio in the basement of a rambling wreck of a house in Hackney I bought with my partner the artist Rob Kesseler and continued to work there up until 2016 when we moved to Kennington. I now work in another basement but also I am fortunate to have light filled studio in Corfu and I split my time between the two places.
