The round shape of the dish persists as a functional form in ceramics, Following in the tradition of English Delftware, my portrait dishes are like the roundel in painting. The pinched and softly modelled surface with their muted fingermarks and undulations have an afinity to the texture of the handmade papers I use in my watercolour sketches. The subjects, inspired by characters in classical and contemporary painting and photography stare out from the glazed surface returning the gaze of the viewer.
